Welcome to Mystery Crime Blog

In 1998, if someone had told me I would be spending the next eight years of my life involved in injustice, I would have said "You are stark raving mad!". Well, I am here to eat those words.

In 1997, a friend was telling me about twin sisters, Betty Wilson and Peggy Lowe, from Alabama who were arrested and tried for supposedly hiring an alcoholic, drug addict con-man, James Dennison White, to kill Betty's wealthy husband, Dr. Jack Wilson, who was a very well-liked and well-known eye doctor in Huntsville. Both sisters were tried on the same evidence and lying testimony. Betty was convicted and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole because she was a rich bitch and slept with a black man in Alabama. Peggy, the saintly one, was acquitted. The convicted con-man, who never really admitted to killing the doctor, has come up for parole several times but is still incarcerated.

After spending six years studying this case including both trial transcripts, putting up an extensive website (http://hankford.com/bettywilson) and spending the remaining two years putting together a book about this case Killer For Hire - The Final Chapter of the Alabama Twins Murder Case, I, as many others, believe that the real killer of the doctor is walking around free. Neither of the twin sisters had a motive to have the good doctor put away but the doctor's ex-wife and son did.

As time permits, I hope to present other similar cases of injustice along with information on books, movies, TV shows, video games, etc., related to mystery crime. In the meantime please visit http://mysterycrimescene.com/.

The Dangers of Craigslist

Tuesday, September 27, 2011

Article by Marie Owens

In a perfect world, Craigslist would be the ideal environment for people to buy, sell, and trade their products and services. However, the world is filled with selfish, immoral, and unstable individuals looking to either steal from you or potentially cause you harm. You don't need a criminal justice degree or a law degree to understand the legal and harmful complications that can occur from using Craigslist. In fact, this isn't an issue for a small segment of Craigslist. There is danger to be found throughout the entire site. Site visitors should be aware of this before they ever browse through the plethora of listings or consider posting an advertisement of their own. Make no mistake, Craigslist is a revolutionary website where mostly positive transactions occur every day. That being said, because there are many dishonest and immoral individuals hanging around the website in a variety of ways, it is always prudent to be cautious when dealing with anyone on Craigslist.

At times, Craigslist seems to be a haven for criminals and unstable individuals. The reason for this is because the site is very unregulated. Although the owners of the site are trying to implement new security features and warnings to better protect the people using Craigslist, the site is simply too large to prevent or catch every bad experience. This is why stories of unscrupulous individuals using Craigslist for illegal or harmful reasons are so common.

There are two things that will virtually guarantee that you will have a safe and secure experience on Craigslist: knowledge and common sense. Knowing about the many different ways that people are being taken advantage of on Craigslist will help you better identify suspicious ads and people. Using common sense goes a long way on this massive site. The old adage definitely holds true here: if it sounds too good to be true, than it probably is.

Common Dangers on Craigslist:

1. Fake Rental Properties

If a seller on Craigslist attempts to do something out of the norm and your gut is telling you that something seems "fishy," it's probably a good idea to back away from the deal. For example, there was a lady that was looking for a home to rent out at an affordable price. She found an ad on Craigslist offering a two bedroom home for rent for just $500 per month, a price much lower than the other rental units in the area. She was excited and immediately contacted the seller. Unfortunately, red flags went up when he told her that he couldn't show her the inside of the home. He wanted to send out a lease agreement, have her complete it, and then have her send it back with a check for $1000. This was the cost of first month's rent plus the security deposit. Luckily, she never sent the guy the funds. The entire thing was a scam. Doing a little more research, the lady found the same address being advertised on a different site by the real owner. Needless to say, he had no idea that his property was also listed on Craigslist. So be sure to verify that you are dealing with the actual landlord before ever submitting a deposit or rent.

2. Fake Job Postings

How do people make money by posting fake job listings on Craigslist? It's very easy and very lucrative. There are plenty of legitimate businesses that will pay a small commission in exchange for a lead. This type of advertising strategy is called "cost per action" marketing. Most people can generate CPA income in very ethical ways. Scammers do things a bit different. Let's assume that there is a credit reporting company that will pay individuals $20 to get people to try out their free credit report offer. The scammer will post a bogus job advertisement on Craigslist. The listing is normally generic in description, but offers extraordinarily higher pay rates and tons of benefits. There's just one hitch: the "employer" needs you to send in a credit report with your resume, but they will only except credit reports from this one particular credit reporting service. If you follow through, the end result will be that the scammer walks away with $20, you walk away with just wasted time and effort, and the credit reporting service just gave away $20 for a lead that will probably not turn into further business.

3. False Love and Relationships

The anonymity that the internet provides makes it very easy for you to be deceived by dangerous people. Until you physically meet the individual you have been communicating with, you really don't know who that individual is. Those looking for love online need to be very careful. The person you have been exchanging emails with on Craigslist may not be authentic. Recently, there was a case regarding a San Francisco attorney who would sexually assault the women who responded to his Craigslist post in the "Men Seeking Women" section. He was eventually caught and prosecuted, but the reality is that there are definitely many more predators lurking on Craigslist. If you do decide to meet someone off of Craigslist, be sure to have the first few meetings done in a public and familiar setting. Also, in order to be extremely safe you can ask a friend to sit nearby you and your date's meeting spot to keep an eye on you. This way you have a friend within close distance to help you just in case the person ends up being dangerous.

4. Theft and Murder

The Internet has made it so that people are incredibly interconnected. People who aren't careful enough, or who are too trusting, can be taken advantage of and even killed. The news story that got the most publicity in this regard is that of the infamous Craigslist Killer. The Craigslist Killer, who was a medical student by the name of Philip Markoff, would reply to Craigslist's ads and either rob or murder the women when they came to his hotel room. Unfortunately, this isn't an isolated incident. It seems like every month has a handful of criminal cases involving people using Craigslist to lure people in with the intent to harm or kill.

What You Can do to Minimize the Dangers on Craigslist

- do background checks on people you intend on meeting in person
- never give out your home address or mailing address
- do additional research on rental units and homes for sale
- never give personal bank account information or credit card information before seeing the product
- verify the businesses that are posting ads and do additional research on the business

Craigslist is a helpful website offering a vast amount of opportunities and possibilities. As great as it is, people using Craigslist are highly recommended to walk cautiously through its jungles. Although the amount of "bad" people using Craigslist is small, their actions can still be devastating and deadly. Whether you are posting ads onto Craigslist or are responding to post that you see, always attempt to use your common sense and think critically before pursing.

Discover the Scary World of Russell Solomon

Article by Noah Houde

Los Angeles really isn't known as the archaeological capital of the world, so you might think that it is a little strange that a young Southern California man might have such a fixation on bones, digs and ancient civilizations. But Russell Solomon is one such man who turned his love for archaeology and paleontology into a career as a popular journalist and fiction writer.

To most people, Russell Solomon is known as an extremely successful journalist in the Los Angeles areas who has written covered everything from Hollywood stories to investigative journalism. But now, his venture into the mystery thriller realm of novels has led him to create "The Lost Pendulum of Montrose", one of this year's most keenly anticipated novels.

It is rare that a first novel by an otherwise unknown novelist gets this kind of attention, but Russell Solomon's novel is doing just that. For people who love reading thrillers and mysteries and trying to piece together a puzzle from generations ago, then this is the book for you. It is the kind of book that will keep you up all night, and many reviewers have even stated that they ended up reading the entire book in one sitting, in other words, they couldn't put it down!

With a degree in journalism and a lifetime's worth of experience in paleontology, Solomon is perhaps the perfect author for this genre of fiction. He has the ability to tell a good story, but he also has the knowledge that only someone who is experienced with digging, and who has been down into graves and digs and knows what they are like, will have. His novel is as much historical fiction as it is mystery thriller and will remind you of some of the best work that authors like John Grisham or even Stephen King have ever produced.
