Welcome to Mystery Crime Blog

In 1998, if someone had told me I would be spending the next eight years of my life involved in injustice, I would have said "You are stark raving mad!". Well, I am here to eat those words.

In 1997, a friend was telling me about twin sisters, Betty Wilson and Peggy Lowe, from Alabama who were arrested and tried for supposedly hiring an alcoholic, drug addict con-man, James Dennison White, to kill Betty's wealthy husband, Dr. Jack Wilson, who was a very well-liked and well-known eye doctor in Huntsville. Both sisters were tried on the same evidence and lying testimony. Betty was convicted and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole because she was a rich bitch and slept with a black man in Alabama. Peggy, the saintly one, was acquitted. The convicted con-man, who never really admitted to killing the doctor, has come up for parole several times but is still incarcerated.

After spending six years studying this case including both trial transcripts, putting up an extensive website (http://hankford.com/bettywilson) and spending the remaining two years putting together a book about this case Killer For Hire - The Final Chapter of the Alabama Twins Murder Case, I, as many others, believe that the real killer of the doctor is walking around free. Neither of the twin sisters had a motive to have the good doctor put away but the doctor's ex-wife and son did.

As time permits, I hope to present other similar cases of injustice along with information on books, movies, TV shows, video games, etc., related to mystery crime. In the meantime please visit http://mysterycrimescene.com/.

Thrilling Romance Novels Review

Sunday, December 22, 2013

Scott Nicholson writes Liquid Fear , a novel about a man who wakes up with a murdered woman in his motel with only a bottle of pills as a clue to what might have happened. It takes on the mystery of a pharmacy conspiracy that occurred years before and left one of them dead and the rest with acute memory loss. Now, the experiments continue and to keep off dangerous side effects such as phobias and dangerous impulses, they must take pills every four hours, but the pills have run out and the people are cracking beneath the pressure. The story surrounds the struggle of these characters to figure out what to do when the pills have run out and their inhibitions are no longer in their own hold.

Nancy C. Johnson writes Her Last Letter, about a pair of three sisters, one of which died and left a letter saying that one of her sister's husbands murdered her, as they were involved in intimate relations. Now, it is up to the two living sisters to determine which of their husbands was the killer and which of the ones had the relationship with the sister. Both men are wealthy with mysterious backgrounds and are suspects causing a whirlwind of mistrust and suspicion in the lives of these two women. For danger and suspense, this is a novel to read.

J.R. Rain writes Moon Dance, a novel about a female vampire who has children and a husband and became a vampire only six years ago when she was attacked. While trying to carry on her business, she also has to deal with her husband's dislike of her vampire form and the strain that her cold body puts on their love life. Luckily, she finds a new love later on and manages to overcome her obstacles.

Heather Killough-Walden writes The Spell (The Big Bad Wolf Series). This book is about a young witch who dreams of werewolves, one being a murderer and the other being a man with a dark past who seeks revenge upon a warlock who once took his brother from him. Drawn to each other, this is a story of magical romance that follows the journey of two people whose paths cross and they are unable to do anything to stop the connection between them. The third installment in a series, you could try reading The Strip and The Heat, as well, for a more comprehensive look on the books.

Lori Foster writes When You Dare , a book about a professional mercenary who believes that persona lives should never mix in business. But when a lovely woman asks him to track down a man who had kidnapped her, he can't resist her beauty and is tempted to mix pleasure with business. Molly, however, is in a mission and cannot think of anything but who among her father or old fiancé might have been the one that kidnapped her. For a book that is filled with passion and crime, as well as the intensity of some dark, shady business, this is the novel to read.

From Innocent Children to Adults

We live in the country and are frequented by visits from mother nature; deer, bear, wild turkeys, hawks and a variety of birds. Earlier this summer we found two nests in our yard, phoebes and bluebirds.

Two are blue bird nests and one was a family of phoebes. Recently, all three of the nest's babies were born, so we have eight baby birds in our yard. We take such joy in watching the mother care for her babies, while the father keeps guard close by. What wonder to watch the babies double in size in a week and how quickly they will be mature enough to take flight and start there own life adventure.

I've watched daily at how innocent and helpless the little babies are, unable to fend for themselves and totally relying on their mother. It made me begin to think about the beginning of life in general for us all and how innocent we're born. How we too are totally dependent on our mother and how much we rely on the mentors and role models who surround us to nurture our lives and guide us in the right direction.

So, where did we go wrong? When in our life did we begin to remind ourselves of all the past wrongs we've committed, the mistakes we've made or the events that we've failed at? Why do we insist on focusing upon our negative past experiences and the scarcity in our lives versus positive accomplishments and abundance? Because we believe that what happened in our life yesterday, has something to do with today.

That's the sad news but I'm here to share some powerful good news, it's not true. Yesterday has absolutely nothing to do with today, unless you say it does. We were all born with a free will to choose the life we want to live. You are the only person in your life that has that power, the power to create who and what you want your life to be.

The truth of the matter is that whatever you believe is true.

That's right, what ever you consistently tell yourself about yourself becomes your own reality.

Now, stay with me for a moment on this thought because I'm going to prove something to you once and for all that will provide you with a breakthrough and tremendous power on creating the life that you choose.

I'm sure you would agree with me that the average person has no problem holding themselves responsible for the past mistakes they've had in their life. They have no issue re-enacting the negative events that they've experienced and bringing them into their present. So, would you agree with me and acknowledge that you do have the power to create in the present, because you're already doing it. When your thoughts are generated by past based negative experiences, your behavior will follow!

The reason why so many of focus on our negative past events is because we believe that our past has something to do with our present. The past based experiences of fear, doubt and anger are what we bring into our present. Our interpretation of the past based events we've experienced are what cause the damage in the present.

What if you could do what is referred to as a "paradigm shift," which means realize that this is not so. That's right, acknowledge that there is no correlation what so ever between your past and how you behave because there is not.

Now, earlier in this article we discussed and you agreed that you have the power to create in the present. We agreed that although what you've been creating has been based on negative energy, you've demonstrated that you do have the power to create.

So, if you have the power to create, just shift what you're creating from negative based energy, to a positive based one. Past based thinking provides self-limited beliefs, while the present allows you to create unlimited thinking.

All behavior is habitual and any behavior can be changed if you first understand why you do the things you do. All behavior is based on thought, so once you shift you're thinking from past based negative energy, to present based positive energy, your behavior will follow. Once your behavior shifts, so will the actions you take and the results you create. It's a process, it requires effort and discipline but you can do it.

So, what does all of this have to do with being born innocent. Well, when you were a young baby and you first decided to try and walk, I'll bet like most babies you fell down. When a baby attempts to walk, they don't associate falling down with failure, only falling down.

You didn't focus on falling down and you didn't make falling down a mistake, it was just falling down. So, you just got back up and tried again because you're not focused on falling down, you're focused on walking...you're present. The present is the only place where you can create the life that you choose.

The next time you have a challenge in your life, slow down and take a deep breath. Be Aware of where you are, get present if you're not, remember that you were born innocent. When you're innocent, the present is full of "unlimited possibilities." Now go and create the life you desire.

Kmart “Ding Dong” and “Giffing-Out” Commercials

Sunday, December 8, 2013

It is amazing the things that get people’s panties in a wad these days. A racy little Christmas commercial from Kmart and Joe Boxer has some customers up in arms – and others laughing.

The new ad, called “Show Your Joe,” shows a group of guys in boxer shorts shaking their, “ding dongs” to the tune of “Jingle Bells.”

Funny?

Not to some customers who rushed right to Kmart’s Facebook page after the ad first aired. Comments both pro and con are still pouring in. Some examples:

“I hate this commercial, Christmas is suppose (sic) to be about JESUS, plain and simple, please get some morals.” (I believe Christmas is more about Santa Claus than Jesus.)

“I saw your new Jingle Bells commercial last night on TV and am disgusted as I find it very offensive. I always regarded Kmart as a family department store. Therefore, I am disappointed in your decision to air such a filthy commercial and saddened that your wholesome image has taken a downward turn.”

“LOVE the Joe Boxer commercial! Yes it's ok for half-naked Victoria's Secret models to be bouncing down the runway spilling out of their bras, but when a playful commercial featuring hot guys is aired, all the right wing "religious" conservatives go nuts. This is 2013 not 1913. I'm going to buy some Joe Boxers today!” (The “ding dong” is located below the belt, known as a very private area similar to the “pussy” area of the female.)

“WHAT A GREAT COMMERCIAL, I LOVE IT, and for reference, I'm 62 years old and have kept my sense of humor and my eye for hotties!” (Wonder what Santa Claus and Jesus would think about the latter comment?)

The majority of polls think the ad is hilarious and clever including my son. Personal I think it is disgusting and distasteful.

A Kmart spokesperson said “We regret if some people found the commercial offensive, as that was not our intent.” Kmart has no plans for removing the boxer ad.

For what it's worth, Chippendales did a similar video back in 2010. (Buns are cute. Similar to boobs..)

Gif-ing Out

What in the world is “Gif-ing Out”. Gif (pronounced JIF like the peanut butter) is a low-res looping computer graphic. You’d suspect that Kmart might be on to something with its new Christmas ad, featuring a happy couple “GIF-ing out” in their driveway and Grandma “Gif-ing Out” in her livingroom. Instead, reaction on social media has been anything but kind.

Here are some comments regarding these Gif-ing Out ads:

Kmart commercials with the whole "gif-ing out" bit may or may not be the most obnoxious and stupidest thing ever.

Am I the only one who hates the Kmart GIF commercials??

No, you’re not.

I loathe this commercial and it's on all the damn time! Why is Grandma on repeat? It's annoying. Is it supposed to be funny, or are we not supposed to notice it? I'd rather see the Joe Boxer jingle dance than this crap!

I woke up to this crime-mercial about a week ago - gave me an instant headache! Thanks to this commercial, I don't believe I will enter a K Mart parking lot to even simply turn around.

I've seen it, not damn funny at all! I think the commercial executives at Kmart, have officially lost their minds!

Sorry couldn’t find any positive comments but I am sure you will agree the ads are nothing but irritating.

Dui: Risking An Innocent Life

Hitting an innocent pedestrian because youre intoxicated while youre driving bears legal implications but it can also cast a heavy weight on your conscience. Lately, DUI cases have risen in California. As a driver, your responsibility over the wheel and that says a lot about you as the driver.

Most states implement .08 BAC limit. Californias Vehicle Code section 23152 states that you are violating the law when you drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and mandates that you cant operate a vehicle with a BAC of .08 percent or more.

Also, both offenses are charged nonetheless even if only one is violated. But you can be only punished for one since the punishments are identical. The penalties are set by the statute and can be rather complicated.
DUI penalties are based on the following factors:

* Previous conviction within 10 years
* Over speeding at least 20 mph over the limit
* Having a minor under 14 years old in the car
* Having a blood-alcohol reading over .08 BAC limit
* Saying no to chemical testing

The following are the penalties imposed on DUI violations: First DUI Offense

* Jail (96 hours to six months)
* Fine ($ 390 to $ 1000 fine)
* License Suspension (six months)
* Complete DUI Program
* Installed Ignition Interlock Device (IID)
* Proof of financial responsibility for reinstatement

Second DUI Offense (within 10 years of prior conviction)

* Jail (90 days to one year)
* Fine ($ 390 to $ 1000 fine)
* License Suspension (two years)
* Apply for Restricted Driver License (required IID)
* Complete DUI Program
* Proof of financial responsibility for reinstatement

Third DUI Offense (within 10 years of prior conviction)

* Jail (120 days to one year)
* Fine ($ 390 to $ 1000)
* License suspension (three years)
* Designation as a habitual offender
* Application for Restricted Driver License after a year
* IID requirement
* Complete DUI Program
* Proof of financial responsibility for reinstatement

Fourth DUI Offense (within 10 years of prior conviction)

* Jail (180 days to one year)
* Fine ($ 390 to $ 1000)
* License suspension (four years)
* Application for Restricted Driver License after a year
* IID requirement
* Complete DUI Program
* Proof of financial responsibility for reinstatement

Case can be affected by the following factors:

* Case facts
* Local courts and prosecutors policies
* Case weaknesses discovered by the defense lawyer
* Lawyers reputation

Felony DUI provisions applies when the victim was injured. Vehicular manslaughter may be charged if the car accident victim dies.

Be aware if the police are violating your legal rights. It is police protocol to advise you before you are made to submit to field sobriety tests and portable field breath tests. You have the right to choose between breath tests or blood testing. If you dont want do either then you should be advised of the legal consequences you will face.

If the breath test is done at the police station, you may be given the chance to have a blood sample for a testing for an independent testing requested by your lawyer.

When youre arrested, it is also a protocol that you are given or appraised of the Miranda Rights such as the right against self-incrimination prior to any further interrogation.

Pulp Fiction Audio Book Mysteries

The early pulp fiction magazines and books were created on cheap pulp paper as an inexpensive source of entertainment for people who wanted to escape from the daily rigors of life. People were trying to make the best of living through the depression and the inexpensive entertainment value of these magazines fit the bill perfectly. The intention of the editors was to have the customer pick up the latest copy of his favorite mystery magazine, read it on the bus or train, shove it in his pocket and either share it with friends and family or throw it away when he was done with it.

Although the genre had its roots in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome in the form of stories told with riddles, the first true mystery novel, "The Woman in White" written by Wilkie Collin, was published in 1860. His novel was the first of its kind to have several characters take turns narrating the story. This allowed for many different view points of the same incident create the mystery and keep the reader wondering where the story would go from there.

The 1920s gave rise to great mystery writers such as Edward Stratemeyer, who wrote the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mystery stories, (under the pen names Franklin W. Dixon and Carolyn Keene respectively). Agatha Christie, one of the great mystery writers, emerged in the 1920s and delighted audiences with many mysterious whodunits.

By the 1930s, the mystery, hard boiled crime detective, thriller and suspense fiction, was firmly entrenched as a popular genre and kept readers demanding more stories. The pulps were a fantastic outlet for great writers to churn out exciting, pulse pounding stories that kept you guessing to the very end. Writers such as Dashiell Hammett's, "The Maltese Falcon", Raymond Chandler's "Fair Well my Lovely" and L. Ron Hubbard's "Dead Men Kill," were prime examples of pulp fiction writers that developed a following fan base that continues to this day.

The 1940s was the great radio era where families gathered after dinner and enjoyed the live performances. The 1950s gave way to television and the pulps declined dramatically as people became fascinated with the visual stories that only TV could produce at that time. The pulps did however, give producers much of the material it needed and famous characters such as Ellery Queen and Perry Mason were pulp based characters that that came to life on the small screen.

Although the pulps virtually disappeared after the advent of TV, there is a revival of the Golden Age of Pulp Fiction in the form of e-books, audio books and reprinted novels. Revisiting these classic stories can give one an appreciation of the writers who could create mysterious characters, baffling situations that elude understanding and along the way you may just recognize some old friends.

Frederick Hail is a passionate advocate of lifelong learning through audio books on cd collections. Galaxy Press Publishing, publisher of "The Golden Age Stories" and all genres of pulp fiction stories and novels, offers a convenient subscription service, so you never have to miss an issue. It's a pulp fiction lover's dream!
